At 1224 m altitude and covering 568 km², Cappadocia is one of the most impressive natural and cultural heritage sites in the world. The tuff erupted 10 million years ago by the Erciyes, Hasandagi and Melendiz volcanoes was sculpted by millions of years of wind, rain and snow erosion into the fairy-tale shapes we know today as fairy chimneys.
The first person to use the name "fairy chimney" was the French traveller Paul Lucas, who visited the region in the 17th century. The cave architecture of the region, however, goes back much further — an unbroken 4000-year tradition of living that dates back to the Hittites.
